Summary

How to move your company data on Sage 50 Accounts from one computer to another.

Description

There may be times when you need to move your company data to another computer. For example, you have a new computer or you temporarily need to work from home on another computer. If you need to move company data, the easiest way is to take a backup of the data and restore it onto the other computer with Sage 50 Accounts installed. We'll run you through how to do this.

TIP: If you want to just view company data on another computer, there are alternative ways to do this. These options don't involve moving the data, and ensure changes made sync with each other:

Resolution

NOTE: If you use Remote Data Access on Sage 50 Accounts v27 and are changing your main site, follow our Change your main site to a new location article.

  1. Take a full backup of your company data, which includes all file types.

Back up window with options to select file types for backup, including Data Files, Report Files, Layout Templates, and more, with checkboxes indicating selections.

  2. Save the backup somewhere that you can access on the other computer, for example, onto a USB stick.
  3. Ensure Sage 50 Accounts is installed on the other computer.
  4. Restore the backup as a new company on same computer.

Screenshot of ‘Add a Company’ interface with options to ‘Create a new company in Sage 50 Accounts,’ ‘Open a company from a network,’ ‘Restore a company from a backup,’ and ‘Use Remote Data Access to connect to a company.’ Below, a path field displays ‘C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\2022\Company.000\’ with ‘Browse’ and ‘Change’ buttons alongside. The bottom right features ‘Continue’ and ‘Cancel’ buttons.

NOTE: The backup only restores if the software is the same version as the data. If the software is a lower version than your data you'll need to update your Sage 50 Accounts to at least the same version. If your software is a higher version than your data, the data will automatically convert to the higher software version.

  5. Once the company data is restored on a different computer, you may want to delete the company on the original computer.

CAUTION: If you only have a 1 user licence you must uninstall Sage 50 Accounts on your old computer.

If you need other computers to access the data on a new computer, whether this is by local network or Remote Data Access you need to re-set up the connection.

Alternative way to move company data

The steps above are the easiest way to move data, however another way is to copy and paste the company data folders to the new location and then amend your company data path. For steps on how to do this, view our guide, How do I move my Sage 50 Accounts data?
