Renaming your accdata folder

Summary

Sometimes it may be necessary to rename your ACCDATA folder in Sage 50 Accounts to troubleshoot an issue or restart your company data.

 CAUTION: Before making any changes, ensure you take a full backup of your data. If you're unsure, contact your local IT support or Sage.

What is the ACCDATA folder?

Your company folder in Sage 50 Accounts contains several folders.

ACCDATA is the folder that contains all of your company data, such as records, transactions and more.

 

Why do I need to rename ACCDATA?

Sometimes, you may need to erase your company data and return to the setup screen. When the ACCDATA is empty, the software opens the New Company Wizard allowing you to set up or restore a company. 

Reasons for renaming the ACCDATA folder include;

  • Sage support asked you to do this as part of troubleshooting an error
  • You need to start your company from scratch
  • You've connected to company data locally, but need to connect to a network version

Can I delete the contents instead of renaming?

We always recommend renaming the ACCDATA folder instead of deleting the contents of it, preventing unexpected data loss.

Rename the folder

  1. Stop the Sage Services. 
  2. Locate your data directory.  Read our Where is my data kept? article, for more help with this.
  3. Right-click the ACCDATA folder, then select Rename.
  4. Rename the folder to ACCDATAOLD.
  5. Right click in a blank area of your screen, then click New, then click Folder.
  6. Name the new folder ACCDATA.
  7. Restart the Sage Services.

To return to the Add a company window

  1. Hold down Windows + E and open This PC.
  2. Browse to C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\XXXX, where XXXX is the year of your software.
  3. Right-click the file named COMPANY, select Rename and change to COMPANY.OLD.
  4. Reopen your Sage 50 Accounts software.
