Summary

How to resolve this error message when you run a report in Sage 50 Accounts.

Description

When you run a report from Sage 50 Accounts, you see the message 'The report file cannot be found'.

Generate Report. The report file cannot be found error message.

This happens when the report file you run isn't in its expected location or it's missing.

Resolution

Check Company Preferences

There’s a setting in company preferences that controls whether Sage looks for your reports in your Data Directory.

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select Company preferences, and enter your password if prompted.
  3. Select the Reporting tab, then look for the checkbox Use Data Path for Reports.
NOTE: This option is only available if you have a multi-user licence.
  4. Select it if clear, or clear it if selected, then press Save.
  5. Now try to run the report.
  • If you selected Use Data Path for Reports and it now works, this means the report is in your Data Directory
  • If you deselected Use Data Path for Reports and it now works, this means the report is local on your computer

If the report still doesn't work, follow the reset your Quick print and email settings section.

Reset your Quick print and email settings

NOTE: Remote Data Access requires the same 'Company.xxx' folder for quick print/email to work on all computers. Otherwise, it only works on the last configured computer.

If the message appears when using the Quick print or Email options, update the default layout settings:

  1. Go to Settings, select Invoice & Order Defaults, then select either Quick print or Email.
  2. Select a different layout from the one you're using, then press OK.
  3. Repeat step 1, choosing the correct layout, then press OK.

If this doesn't fix the issue, follow the restore the reports and layouts only backups section.

Restore the reports and layouts only backups

You can restore the backups from the following directory. Replace 'year' in the example below with the relevant version, for example 2025.

'C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\year\DataRestores'

  1. In Sage Accounts, take an all files backup.
  2. On the menu bar in Sage Accounts, go to File then select Restore.
  3. Press Browse, then browse to the DataRestores folder in the location above.
  4. Select the backup file then press Open.
  5. Press OK then Yes.
  6. Press OK, enter your logon name and password, then press OK.

If the problem continues, follow the reinstall Sage 50 Accounts section.

Reinstall Sage 50 Accounts

This message can appear if there was a problem during the installation.

To resolve this, you must reinstall your software.
