Check year to date values

If you've processed SMP for this employee previously, any remaining year to date values prevent your software from calculating another period of SMP.

You need to remove these before you add the new SMP.

For help with doing this, visit our statutory maternity pay (SMP) doesn't calculate for an employee's second child article.

Follow the steps

  1. Select Employee, then double-click the relevant employee.
  2. Select the Absence tab and the S.M.P. button.
  3. Enter the Baby Arrival Dates and Employment Dates.
  4. Ensure the Manual Statutory Maternity Pay Calculations checkbox is clear.
  5. Check and complete the Additional Information.
NOTE: When you receive the MATB1 form, select the checkbox beside Medical Evidence Received for SMP to calculate.
  6. Select Auto Calc to calculate the employee's average weekly gross pay.
  7. A prompt could appear that holiday payments made in or near the relevant period affect the average earnings, click OK.
  8. Select the 8 Weeks Gross tab. This will show the values that make up the average weekly gross pay.
  9. To check the employee's entitlement select the Entitlement tab. This tab also updates to show the amounts paid after you process each period.
  10. Select OK, then Save.
  11. Select Close.

Your software calculates the SMP due when you next process this employee's payroll. You can see the SMP amount due in the enter payments - summary tab

NOTE: Special rules apply if the employee goes onto sick leave within 4 weeks of their SMP beginning. Statutory maternity pay (SMP) - common questions
