Resolution

TIP: If you're using v31 or above, read our guide for using the data service manager here.

Identify the computer where your data is held

To use the Sage 50 Data Service Manager you first have to identify the name of the computer or the server address of where your data is held.

I can open Sage Accounts
  1. Open Sage Accounts to the Company Selection screen.
  2. Check the Data path column for the company in question.

If the address starts with C:\ your data is held on the computer you are on. In this case, you can use the IP address 127.0.0.1 when connecting to the data service manager.

If the address starts with a different letter, for example S:\ this may be a mapped drive. To find the computer name for this drive, hold down the Windows key and press R, enter CMD then click OK, then type net use and press enter.

I can't open Sage Accounts
  1. In Windows, browse to the following relevant folder:

    Sage Accounts v29 C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\2023
    Sage Accounts v28 C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\2022
    Sage Accounts v27 C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\2021
    Sage Accounts v26 C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\2020
  2. Double-click the COMPANY file and choose to open it using Notepad, then click OK.
  3. A notepad window opens, showing the path to your accounts data. If you have more than one company, all the paths show on separate lines.

In this example, the name of the computer where your data is held is sage02

If the address starts with C:\ your data is held on the computer you are on. In this case, you can use the IP address 127.0.0.1 when connecting to the data service manager.

If the address starts with a different letter, for example S:\ this may be a mapped drive. To find the computer name for this drive, hold down the Windows key and press R, enter CMD then click OK, then type net use and press enter.

Run the Sage Data Service Manager

From within Sage 50 Accounts
  1. Click Tools, then click Data Service Manager.
  2. Click OK then click No.
From the Windows Start menu
  1. Click Start then in your program list click Sage Accounts.
  2. Click Sage 50 Data Service Manager or Data Service Manager (23 and below).

  3. Under Server, enter the computer name (UNC path) or IP address for the computer where you data is held, then click Connect.

The path should not contain any leading slashes, for example for a path of \\sage02 enter sage02

Once connected, the status of your data service shows as either Started or Stopped.

  4. Click the Data Service Manager tab then either:
    • Click Start Service to start the data service
    • Click Stop Service to stop the data service

Install updates on the server

If you've installed any updates on your network, but have yet to install them on your server or the computer where your data is held, you can use the Sage 50 Data Service Manager to install the update.

  1. Ensure you are on, or remotely accessing, the computer where your data is held.

If you're not sure how to do this, please contact your IT support.

  2. Click Start then in the program list click Sage Accounts, and click Sage 50 Data Service Manager.
  3. In the Server and version tab, if available, click Install now to install the latest update.

If Install now is not available, instead you can manually download and install the update.

Clear your licence held in the data service

Your data service also stores your licence details so they can be shared across you client computers.

If required, you can clear these details and also prevent them being shared from the server.

  1. Run the Sage 50 Data Service Manager.
  2. In the Server and version tab, click the Version drop-down and click your version.
  3. Under Server, enter the computer name (UNC path) or IP address for the computer where you data is held, then click Connect.

The path should not contain any leading slashes, for example for a path of \\sage020532 enter sage020532

Once connected, the status of your data service shows as either Started or Stopped.

  4. Click the Data Service Manager tab then either:
    • Click Clear Licence to clear your licence details from the data service. This does not clear the licence on your client computers, it just clears the details on the data service.
    • Select the Prevent a licence being copied from server check box to stop the licence being shared across you client computers.
