When to update your business name

You must update your business name in Sage after changing it with Companies House. Your registered name in Sage must match your official business name exactly.

This ensures:

  • Your financial records remain legally compliant
  • Your invoices and reports accurately reflect your registered company details
  • You avoid confusion when dealing with customers, suppliers and tax authorities

Before you start

Make sure you've already updated your new business name with Companies House and HMRC. If you're a limited company, Sage will verify your new name against Companies House records.

Only the business owner can request this change.

Are you a student? To change your business name, follow the steps below. You don't need to send any supporting documentation, just mention you have a student account.

How to update your business name

  1. Select your business type to access the correct form:
  2. Complete the form using your registered business owner email address.
  3. Sage will email a copy of the completed form to you.
  4. Forward that email and any relevant document attachments to [email protected].

What happens next

The Company Name Change Team will verify your new business name against Companies House records. 

They'll respond to your email within 3 working days.

If there's an issue, they'll contact you using the email address you provided.

Using a different trading name?

You can trade using a separate "trading as" name. However, your Sage records must always match your official registered business name.

Always display your registered business details clearly alongside any trading names you use.
