Review the chart of accounts

When you first set up your company in Accounting Start, we create a set of categories. We base these on your type of business: Sole trader, limited company, or limited liability partnership (LLP).

We use categories to group your transactions so you can see how your business is performing.

Each  has a Group and Type that determines how transactions appear on your financial reports. These include the Profit and Loss and the Balance Sheet.

All your ledger accounts appear in the Chart of Accounts list.

Find a category

  1. Go to More, select Business Settings and then Chart of Accounts.
  2. Use the Search box to enter a Category name or number to filter by.
  3. Select the Type drop-down to filter the list by type.
  4. Select Search to apply the filters.

Export the chart of accounts

You can export the list of categories to an Excel spreadsheet.

The export shows the nominal code, category name, control account, type, tax rate and its visibility.

  1. Go to MoreBusiness Settings and then Chart of Accounts.
  2. From the New Ledger Account drop-down, select Export Accounts.

The report is ready when a notification displays on the main navigation bar, to the left of Profile. Select the notification bell to open the report.

When setting up a new chart of accounts, consider exporting the existing chart of accounts to a spreadsheet. You can then make the required changes and import them back into Accounting Start. You can only do this when you haven't entered any transactions.

Import a chart of accounts

Use our CSV file template to import your existing chart of accounts. Useful if you're coming from another system and want to use the same ledger accounts.

You can only do this when you haven't entered any transactions in Accounting Start.

Read our import your chart of accounts guide.

Change your categories

Create as many new categories as you need or change existing ones to suit your business.

For example, if you're running a gardening business, you might want to change Product Sales to Gardening Sales.

Read our how to create or edit a category guide.

Print a list of categories

  1. From Reports, choose Chart of Accounts under Advanced Reports.
  2. By default, the report shows a list of all categories.
