End-of-year Income Tax return

Created on  | Last modified on

Summary

How your Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax works with Sage Sole Trader and Sage Accounting. This is for submitting your end of year tax return to HMRC.

Description

Sage is building a solution that lets you submit your end of year tax return to HMRC from Sage Sole Trader. We'll share updates once this feature is available.

Who this applies to

MTD for Income Tax applies from the 2026 to 2027 tax year onwards.

The deadline to submit your tax return for 2026 to 2027 is 31 January 2028.

The only exception is if you joined the HMRC MTD for Income Tax pilot for the 2025 to 2026 tax year. If you were part of this pilot, your deadline to submit is 31 January 2027.

If you weren't part of the pilot, MTD for Income Tax doesn't apply to your 2025 to 2026 tax year. Submit your tax return through your usual route instead, either directly with HMRC or through your accountant.

If you were on the 2025 to 2026 pilot

If you joined the MTD for Income Tax pilot, but you want to submit before this solution is available, you may be able to withdraw. This lets you revert to submitting your Self Assessment tax return through the usual route.

Contact HMRC first to confirm whether you're eligible to withdraw:

  • If you joined MTD for Income Tax before April 2026, use the dedicated HMRC support number shown in your sign-up communication
  • Otherwise, contact HMRC Self Assessment general enquiries
