Sage 200 Standard / Sage for Education - "The application cannot be started. Please contact the vendor."

Created on  | Last modified on

When trying to update to the new version of Sage 200 Standard / Sage for Education you may get the following message "The application cannot be started. Please contact the vendor."

NOTE: The application will download and the message will appear when the new program tries to install.

The reason for this is usually down to a limitation of permissions given to the Windows user profile who is attempting the update.

The following navigation instructions are for Windows 7. If you use a different operating system you may need to consult the system documentation.

  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program.
  • Scroll down the list until you find Sage 200 Standard Online.
  • Highlight the program and click on uninstall/change.
  • Follow the wizard to uninstall the program.

Once the wizard has completed, go to c:\Users\*relevant user*\AppData\Local\Apps and rename the folder called 2.0 as 2.0old.

Now go to and sign in with your email address and password.

  • In the Clients section, Click on the link for Sage 200 App and download the file.
  • Once the file has downloaded, right-click on it and choose the option to run as administrator. The program should now install and run correctly.

NOTE: If the re-install fails, click on details button on the error, this opens a notepad file. Find the following link
StandardDesktop.application, copy into a browser and download the application directly.

If this does not resolve the issue this will potentially be down to the version of .NET Framework currently installed.

You will need to download and install an updated version of .NET. To find out your current version of .NET:

  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program.
  • Scroll down the list which appears until you find Microsoft .NET Framework.
  • If the version number is 4.5.1 or below you may need to apply an update manually (you may need to contact your local IT for help with this).
  • Go to Microsoft website and download .net 4.5.2 or above.

You will now need to uninstall and re-install your Sage 200 app again.

If the above steps do not resolve the issue, Please consult your local I.T. to check your user permissions.
