How to check if you've access to a website using Telnet

Summary

Sage software sometimes access websites in the background, to check for downloads and updates for your software. If this fails, to help you troubleshoot, you can check if your computer has access to the required websites using Telnet.

Resolution

To enable Telnet command line utilities
  1. In Windows > Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  2. Turn Windows features on or off > select the Telnet Client check box > OK.

    The system installs the required files. This takes a less than a minute.
To check if you've access to a website
  1. Windows key + R > type cmd > OK.
  2. At the command prompt type telnet <> <>

    Where <> and <> are the web address and port number for the site you're checking.

    For example:

    • telnet download.sage.com 443
    • telnet update.sage.com 443

If successful, a blank black window will appear.

If unsuccessful, the following message shows:

Could not open connection to host on port ***: connect failed
