Windows permissions required by Sage 50 Accounts

Created on  | Last modified on

Summary

The Windows permissions you need to use Sage 50 Accounts.

Description

Windows uses NTFS permissions which control access to specific files and folders. Incorrect settings can prevent some or all users from running the software.

TIP: If the software runs correctly as a local administrator but not as a user, NTFS permissions are likely to be the issue.

Resolution

Windows permissions

To ensure all Sage users have the appropriate permissions, you'll need to allow Modify permissions for specific files and folders.

These files and folders include:

  • The Sage Accounts program folder and all subfolders and files
  • The folder that contains the ACCDATA folder and all subfolders and files

NOTE: Open Sage 50 Accounts to note the program and data directories in Help then About. Can't open the software? Search for the Sage.exe file to locate the program directory and the Accdata folder for the data directory.

  • C:\ProgramData\Sage and all subfolders and files
  • 32-bit - C:\Program Files\Common Files\SageSBD and all subfolders and files
    64-bit - C:\Program Files(x86)\Common Files\SageSBD and all subfolders and files
Modify permissions for the user of the data service that is logged on, if your data is held on a server.

To find out which user this is:

  1. Press the Windows Key   + R on your keyboard then enter Services.msc.
  2. Click OK then right-click the Sage 50 Accounts Service.
  3. Select Properties then select the Log On tab.

Amend Windows permissions:

NOTE: Speak to your system administrator if you have problems changing permissions.

On a domain, create a new user group for all Sage Users on the Domain Controller and apply the relevant permissions. If required, add or remove individual users from the user group as appropriate.

Windows 10 and 11

NOTE: You must log on to the computer as a user with administrative rights.

  1. Press the Windows key  + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to the folder you want to change, then right-click.
  3. Select Properties then select the Security tab.
  4. Click Edit and select the required user or user group you want to give permissions to. For example, Everyone.
  5. In the Allow column, select the Modify checkbox.

This automatically selects Read & execute, List folder contents, Read and Write.

  6. Click OK then click Advanced.
  7. Select the Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permission entries from this object checkbox.
  8. Click OK to confirm, then select Yes.
  9. Click OK on the Security window.

Access Denied

If you receive an 'Access denied' message when resetting the permissions:

  1. Go to the Owner tab, then select Edit.
  2. Click Continue and check the following to amend where necessary:
  • The Current owner - Ensure this is Administrators

If you change the owner, you must select OK to close before you can select the Replace owner on subcontainers and object checkbox.

  • Replace owner on subcontainers and objects - Select this check box
  1. Repeat steps 4 to 8.
