ODBC - 'Data files are wrong version'

Find information on how to resolve data files wrong version with ODBC and Sage Accounts.

When you run a Microsoft Query to link to a specific version of Sage Accounts, the following message can appear:

'Data files are wrong version'

There are several possible solutions. The recommended solution varies depending on how you use the ODBC driver.

Rename the data source

We recommend this option if you have Excel workbooks that connect to a single set of data.

1. Start button > Search programs and files box > type odbcad32 > Enter.

   Windows Vista - Start button > Start Search box > type odbcad32 > Enter.

   Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 - Start > Run > type odbcad32 > Enter.

   Note: For a 64-bit version of Windows, type C:\windows\syswow64\odbcad32.exe > Enter.

2. System DSN > select the data source for your version of Sage Accounts, for example SageLine50v18 > Configure.
3. Amend the data source name to add the word 'old', for example SageLine50v18old.

When you next refresh the worksheet, you are prompted for the new version

Remove and manually add the data source

We recommend this option if you have multiple Excel worksheets that connect to different set of data.

1. Start button > Search programs and files box > type odbcad32 > Enter.

   Windows Vista - Start button > Start Search box > type odbcad32 > Enter.

   Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 - Start > Run > type odbcad32 > Enter.

   Note: For a 64-bit version of Windows, type C:\windows\syswow64\odbcad32.exe > Enter.

2. System DSN > select the data source for your version of Sage Accounts, for example SageLine50v18 > Configure.
3. Note the information in the Data Source Name and Data Path boxes > OK.
4. Select the data source > Remove > Yes.
5. Add > select the correct Sage Line 50 driver, for example Sage Line 50 v18 > Finish.
6. Complete the Data Source Name and Data Path boxes with the information noted in step 3 > OK.

Microsoft Excel 2007 and above - Change the data source name from within Excel

1. Open the worksheet you want to use to connect to your Sage data.
2. Data > Connections > select the first connection > Properties.
3. Definition > Connection string > if the string begins with DSN=SageLine50vXX, where XX is your previous version of Sage 50 Accounts, replace this with your current version.
4. OK > if required, enter your Sage 50 Accounts user name and password.
5. Repeat this process from step 2 for any additional connections.

Rename the Sage Line 50 ODBC driver files

1. Start button > Search programs and files box > type odbcad32 > Enter.
2. Windows Vista - Start button > Start Search box > type odbcad32 > Enter.
3. Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 - Start > Run > type odbcad32 > Enter.
4. Note: For a 64-bit version of Windows, type C:\windows\syswow64\odbcad32.exe > Enter.
5. System DSN > select the data source for your current version of Sage Accounts, for example SageLine50v18 > Configure.
6. Select the information in the Data Path box > right-click > Copy > OK.
7. Select the data source for your previous version of Sage 50 Accounts > Configure.
8. Delete the information in the Data Path box > right-click > Paste > OK.
9. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for any other previous versions of Sage 50 Accounts.
10. Open Windows Explorer > browse to C:\Windows\System32.
11. 64-bit operating systems - Open Windows Explorer > browse to C:\Windows\Syswow64.
12. Locate the sXXdbc.dll file, where XX represents your previous version, for example s17dbc.dll > right-click the file > Rename > add the word old to the end of the file name > Enter.
13. Repeat step 8 for any sXXdbc.dll files from previous versions of Sage 50 Accounts.
14. Locate the sXXdbc.dll file, where XX represents your current version, for example s18dbc.dll > right-click the file > Copy.
15. Right-click any blank area within the folder > Paste.
16. Locate the new file > right-click the file > rename > rename the file to match your previous version, for example s17dbc.dll > Enter.
17. The copied file is automatically named Copy of sXXdbc.dll, where XX is your current version of Sage 50 Accounts, for example Copy of s18dbc.dll.
18. Repeat steps 11 and 12 for any other previous versions of Sage 50 Accounts.
