Employee proof of sickness
Description

If an employee needs to take time off work when they're ill, whether they need a fit note depends on their length of sickness absence.

Fit notes and proof of sickness

A fit note, also known as a sick note, is an official written statement from a doctor giving their medical opinion on a person's fitness for work.

It may also make recommendations for you to support your employee.

Changes in July 2022

From 1 July 2022, the following healthcare professionals are able to provide employees with a fit note;

  • Nurses
  • Occupational therapists
  • Pharmacists (working in hospitals and GP practices)
  • Physiotherapists

When proof of sickness is required

You can ask for proof if they've been off work for more than 7 days in a row including non-working days.
