Take a backup
Click File, click Backup then complete the Backup Wizard.
NOTE: If you have a multi-company version of Sage 50 Payroll, you must take a backup of each company.
Note the software and data directories
Click Help, click About then, under Program Details, note the Program directory and Data directory paths and close the Sage 50 Payroll software.
Uninstall the program
Windows 11
- Click the Windows start menu then select the relevant Sage Payroll option,
If the software isn't in the list of pinned apps, click All apps.
- Right-click the app then click Uninstall.
Windows 10
- Right-click the Windows start menu then click Apps and Features.
- Select the relevant Sage Payroll option then click Uninstall/Change.
- Click Yes then click OK.
Windows 8
- Press the Windows key + R, type control panel then click OK.
- Click Programs and Features, select the relevant Sage Payroll option then click Uninstall/Change.
- Click Yes then click OK.
Remove data, directory structure and shared system files (optional)
TIP: By doing this you're deleting your Sage 50 Payroll database. If needed, you must make sure that you've backed up your data.
Delete the software and data directories
- Open Windows Explorer, press Alt, click Tools, click Folder Options then click View.
- Select the Show hidden files and folders option, clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box then click OK.
- Browse to and delete the program and data directories noted earlier.
Delete the Payroll.ini file
TIP: You don't need to carry out this section if you've already deleted the folder in which the payroll.ini file is located in the previous section.
- Open Windows Explorer, browse to the following locations then delete the payroll.ini file.
C:\Windows
C:\Program Files\Sage Payroll
C:\Program Files(x86)\Sage Payroll
C:\ProgramData\Sage\Payroll
C:\users\\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Windows
C:\users\\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files
Alternatively, to delete the Payroll.ini file using the command prompt:
- Press the Windows key
+ R, type cmd then click OK. - Type cd\ then press Enter.
NOTE: If the prompt C:\\ doesn't appear, and it shows a different drive, for example M:\, type cd c:\ then press Enter.
- Type del payroll.ini /s then press Enter.
The locations of the payroll.ini file and confirmation of their deletion appear. - Type exit then press Enter.
