ERROR: Error 1920: Service Sage AutoUpdate Manager Service failed to start
Description

When installing your Sage Accounts software, the following message can appear:

'Error 1920: Service Sage AutoUpdate Manager Service failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services'.

To resolve this, follow each section below, installing again after each one. If you're unsure on how to complete any of these steps, we recommend you speak to your local IT support.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, follow each of the sections, installing Sage again after each section.

▼ Clear the temporary folder
  1. Press and hold down the Windows key and press R.
  2. Type %temp%, then press OK.
  3. Press Ctrl + A and press Delete.
  4. Select Yes.

CAUTION: This deletes all the files in your temporary folder. Deleting affect other software, if you're unsure, check with your IT support.

If the issue persists, follow the restart your computer section.

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. Log on to the computer as an administrator.

If the issue persists, follow the disable your antivirus software section.

  • Temporarily disable your antivirus software

For help with disabling your antivirus software, contact your IT support.

If the issue persists, follow the end any Sage processes section. 


▼ End any Sage processes
  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete.
  2. Select Task Manager and select the Processes tab.
  3. Locate and select Sage.Central.AutoUpdateManager.Service.exe.
  4. Select End Process or End task.
  5. End any other processes that begin with Sage or sg.
  6. Install the software again by running the installation program.

If the issue persists, follow the amend permissions and check permissions sections. If you're unsure on how to complete any of these steps, we recommend you speak to your local IT support.

Amend permissions to the Common Files folder

  1. Press and hold down the Windows key and press R.
  2. Type explorer, then press OK.
  3. Browse to C:\Program Files.
  4. Right-click Common Files and select Properties.
  5. Select the Security tab then the Advanced button.
  6. Press Change next to the Owner, at the top of the window.
  7. Type your username or Administrators in the Enter the object name to select field, then press Check Names.
  8. Press OK.
  9. In the Advanced Security Settings for Common Files window, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects checkbox.
  10. Press Apply.
  11. Press OK on the Windows Security message if it appears.
  12. Press OK to close the Advanced Security Settings for Common Files window.
  13. On the Common Files Properties window, select the Edit button.
  14. Select each Group or username in turn and select the Full Control checkbox in the Allow column. Do this for each group except CREATOR OWNER.
  15. Press Apply then OK.
  16. To close the Common Files Properties window, press OK

Amend permissions to the Sage folder

  1. Press and hold down the Windows key and press R.
  2. Type explorer, then press OK.
  3. Browse to C:\Program Files.
  4. Right-click Sage and select Properties.
  5. Select the Security tab then the Advanced button.
  6. Press Change next to the Owner, at the top of the window.
  7. Type your username or Administrators in the Enter the object name to select field, then press Check Names.
  8. Press OK.
  9. In the Advanced Security Settings for Sage window, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects checkbox.
  10. Press Apply.
  11. Press OK on the Windows Security message if it appears.
  12. Press OK to close the Advanced Security Settings for Sage window.
  13. Press OK to close the Advanced Security Settings for Common Files window.
  14. On the Common Files Properties window, select the Edit button.
  15. Select each Group or username in turn and select the Full Control checkbox in the Allow column. Do this for each group except CREATOR OWNER.
  16. Press Apply then OK.
  17. To close the Common Files Properties window, press OK

Amend permissions to the AccountsService folder

  1. Press and hold down the Windows key and press R.
  2. Type explorer, then press OK.
  3. Browse to C:\Program Files\Sage.
  4. Right-click AccountsServicevXX and select Properties.

    TIP:

    vXX denotes the version number.

     
  5. Select the Security tab then the Advanced button.
  6. Press Change next to the Owner, at the top of the window.
  7. Type your username or Administrators in the Enter the object name to select field, then press Check Names.
  8. Press OK.
  9. In the Advanced Security Settings for AccountsServicevXX window, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects checkbox.
  10. Press Apply.
  11. Press OK on the Windows Security message if it appears.
  12. Press OK to close the Advanced Security Settings for AccountsServicevXX window.
  13. On the AccountsServicevXX Properties window, select the Edit button.
  14. Select each Group or username in turn and select the Full Control checkbox in the Allow column. Do this for each group except CREATOR OWNER.
  15. Press Apply then OK.
  16. To close the Common Files Properties window, press OK.

Check permissions in the v2 folder

  1. Browse to C:\ProgramFiles\Common Files\Sage\Shared\AutoUpdateManager\v2.
  2. Double-click the AutoUpdateClient folder.
  3. Right-click the first file in the AutoUpdateClient folder.
  4. Select Properties then the Security tab.
  5. Select the Advanced button.
  6. Check if the Owner at the top of the window is Administrators.
  • If the Owner is Administrators, close all windows, then proceed to step 14
  • If the Owner isn't Administrators, follow steps 7 to 14
  1. Press Change next to the Owner, at the top of the window.
  2. Type your username or Administrators in the Enter the object name to select field, then press Check Names.
  3. Press OK then Apply.
  4. Press OK on the Windows Security message if it appears.
  5. Press OK to close the Advanced Security Settings window.
  6. Press OK to close the Properties window.
  7. Repeat these steps for every file in the v2 folder.
  8. Install the software again by double-clicking the installer you downloaded.
