Install Sage Taxation on a terminal server
Description

There are two types of installation available to terminal services:

  • SQL and Sage Taxation held on one server accessed via remote desktop users
  • SQL held on one server with the applications held on a different terminal services server.

With the second configuration, the terminal server acts more like a traditional workstation as it doesn't hold any client data. that is the installation type we look at in this guide.

Before you begin

Whether you're installing on to one server or on to two servers, you must make your connection via Microsoft Remote Desktop (RDP). Connecting via an admin console (e.g. Hyper-V) won't work as the software will install to your user profile, meaning only you will be able to access Sage Taxation.

To connect via remote desktop:

  1. Select Start and search for Remote Desktop and launch the application
  2. When the remote desktop connection window appears, enter the name of the server that you are trying to connect to
  3. Follow any on screen prompts to sign in with your normal credentials
  4. Proceed with the rest of the article depending on your configuration.

Install on a terminal server

To install Sage Taxation so that all workstation users will be able to access the data, you need to install as an administrator via a remote desktop connection to the Terminal Server from a workstation.

  1. Run the downloaded of Sage Taxation installation on you computer. As you are installing Sage Taxation to be used over a network, you will need to do this on the server computer where Microsoft SQL is either already installed, or where you want your Taxation databases to be kept.
  2. Your computer will be checked to see if any prerequisite software is required before Sage Taxation can be installed.
  3. Read and accept the terms of the licence agreement, then click Next.
  4. Your Microsoft SQL Server status is reported.
    • If you have Microsoft SQL Server already installed , the installation will detect this. A message will tell you the name of the SQL server that it will use to host the Sage Taxation database.
    • If SQL is not installed, the pre-install checks will detect this and Find SQL servers to host data will report a warning in the results section. You can install Microsoft SQL Server Express later in the installation.
  5. When the checks have completed successfully click Next
  6. If this is a new installation, no Sage Taxation database will be found. Choose to install a new version of Sage Taxation, and choose what local drive you want to install the Sage Taxation program files to, then click NextThe SQL instance page appears.
    • If SQL is already installed, the installation will detect the available SQL instances. Select the SQL instance you'd like to use from the drop-down list.
    • If an existing SQL Server cannot be found, or you want to install a new instance of SQL Server Express, choose the second option. From the drop-down box, select the drive on which you want to install SQL Server Express.
    • If you are installing on a server, the drive you select must be accessible by all workstations that will have Taxation installed.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Review the settings for the installation, then click Install.

If your computer needs to be rebooted to complete the installation a page appears telling you that the computer needs to be restarted. Once you have rebooted, run the installation again.

Install on different servers

NOTE: To install the Sage Taxation program files to a different server than the server where Microsoft SQL and your Sage Taxation database are installed, you will need to access the relevant server remotely via a workstation, using administrator log in details. This will ensure that the program files are installed to the C:\Program Files folder, allowing access to the programs for all Terminal Workstation users. If you do not install these program files remotely via a workstation, they will be installed to the User Profile, and Terminal Workstation users will not have access to them.

  1. You can install Sage Taxation by browsing to the setup file from your terminal services machine. The path to the setup file location is normally in the format: \\[servername]\SuiteWorkstationInstaller
  2. Run ClientSetup.exe, then progress through the installation wizard.
