Apply a tax code change notice from the HMRC mailbox
Description

If HMRC send you an electronic notice to change an employee's tax code, you can easily apply this in your software.

Cause
Resolution

HMRC may issue an effective from date with a tax code notification. Where this is received into the IR secure mailbox your software applies the effective from date on the notification automatically.

Payroll then applies the new tax code when your process date is on or after this date.

  1. Click e-Submissions then IR Secure Mailbox.
  2. Click New Mail to check for any new mail items.
  3. Double-click HMRC Mailbox to expand a list of folders.
  4. Click P6/P6B or P9 depending on what type of notice HMRC have sent.
  5. Click the notice then click Open to view the details.
  6. When you're ready, click Apply, then click Yes.
  7. If you receive multiple notifications, repeat steps 5 and 6 for each one.
  8. Click Close.

Your tax code notifications are now applied, ready for when they're due to take effect.
