Choose the verification checks you want to use By default all checks run automatically, but if there are any checks you don't need, you can choose which checks to run. - In Sage 50 Accounts click VAT, then click VAT Return.
- In VAT Verification Settings select or clear the check boxes as required, then click OK.
Find out more about each check, and how to correct any issues found, in the Verification checks available section. View the verification check results - In Sage 50 Accounts, click VAT, then select VAT Return.
- Within your VAT Return click, Calculate.
- On the Reconcile VAT Return window, click View results.
- To view any potential issues, to the right of the relevant check, click View.

Verification checks available To find out more about each check and how to correct any issues found, choose the options below: ▼Identify possible duplicate transactions Checks for transactions with a matching account reference, date, reference, nominal code, net value, tax code and VAT value. To resolve these: If the transactions aren't duplicates | If you're sure they’re correct, you can ignore this warning. Click Close then check any other warnings in the Verification results summary, or click Close again to continue with your VAT Return. | If the transactions are duplicates | You can either delete or reverse one of the transactions. - Close out of the VAT Return.
- Click Transactions, select the transaction to delete or reverse, then click Delete. Read more >
Once you’ve deleted or reversed the transactions, you must then recalculate the VAT Return to update the values. | ▼Identify Invoices or Credits which haven’t been updated Checks for all invoices and credits that you haven't posted to the ledgers yet. To resolve these: If you don't want to update these | Click Close then check any other warnings in the Verification results summary or click Close again to continue with your VAT Return. | If you need to include these in your VAT Return | You can update the invoices to include them on your VAT Return. - Close the VAT Return.
- Click Invoices and credits, select the required invoice or credit then click Update ledgers.
Once you’ve updated the required invoices or credits to include these values, recalculate the VAT Return. | ▼Identify delivered Purchase Orders that you haven't invoiced Checks for delivered purchase orders that you haven't posted to the ledgers yet. To resolve these: If you don't want to update these | Click Close then check any other warnings in the Verification results summary or to continue with your VAT Return, click Close again. | If you need to include these in your VAT Return | - Close the VAT Return.
- Click Purchase orders, select the required order then click Update ledgers. Read more >
Once you’ve updated the required orders to include these values, recalculate the VAT Return. | ▼Identify transactions with a VAT value where the Tax Code isn’t on the VAT Return This checks for transactions which have a tax code which isn’t on the VAT Return. To resolve these: If the VAT Return should include the tax code | Close the VAT Return and then change the tax code in: - Settings, Configuration, in the Tax Codes tab. Read more >

- To delete or reverse a transaction, click Transactions, select the transaction to delete or reverse, then click Delete.
To amend a transaction, click Transactions, select the transaction to amend, then click Edit. The transactions that appear depend on which percentages you enter in the VAT Verification Settings. To resolve these: If the values are correct | Ignore this warning, click Close then check any other warnings, or to continue your VAT Return click Close. | If the values are incorrect | You can either delete, amend or reverse the transactions: - Close out of the VAT Return.

To resolve these: If the tax codes are correct | Ignore this warning, click Close then check any other warnings, or to continue your VAT Return click Close. | If the non-vatable tax code is incorrect | You can change this within Settings, Company Preferences on the VAT tab. Read more > | If the tax codes are incorrect | Close the VAT Return then delete the journals and re-post them with the correct tax codes. Read more > | Once you’ve corrected the non-vatable tax code or the journals, you must then recalculate the VAT Return to update the values. ▼Identify possible incorrect EC transactions Select this to check for transactions using an EC tax code where the customer or supplier record doesn't have all the correct EC information. For example, the customer record may not have a VAT Registration Number. To resolve these: NOTE: If these transactions are incorrect, this can also affect your EC Sales List. If the tax code is correct | Check the customer or supplier record to ensure the correct country and VAT number are present. | If the tax code shouldn't be an EC tax code | You can change this within Settings, Configuration, in the Tax Codes tab.
