How to navigate in different versions of Windows

Common Windows Functions

Hidden Files and Folders

Internet ExplorerInternet Explorer is fully depreciated in Windows 11. It's replaced by Microsoft Edge. On June 15, 2022 Microsoft will end support for Internet Explorer. Read More about IE Mode for Edge.Internet Explorer has been superseded by Microsoft Edge but Internet Explorer is still available in the background.

This can be accessed by:

  • Windows key + R > type iexplore > OK.

.NET - To enable .NET 2.0 and 3.0

.NET Framework 4.8 is included with Windows 11, and runs any .NET Framework 4.x app. Sage software is designed for earlier .NET Versions. To enable this: 

Press Windows Key > Type Windows Features > select Turn Windows Features on or Off

Locate .NET Framework 3.5 (Including .NET 2.0 and 3.0) > Select the following check boxes:

  • Net Framework 3.5 (includes .Net 2.0 and 3.0).
  • Windows Communication Foundation HTTP Activation.
  • Windows Communication Foundation Non-HTTP Activation.

Click OK. 

.NET version 4.5 is installed as part of Windows 8 and 10, however Sage software is designed to work with earlier versions of .NET. You can enable .NET 2.0 and 3.0 by following the steps below:
  1. Windows key + X > Programs and Features.
  2. Turn Windows features on or off.
  3. Windows Features window > to expand .Net Framework 3.5 (includes .Net 2.0 and 3.0) click the plus sign.
  4. Select the following check boxes:
    • Net Framework 3.5 (includes .Net 2.0 and 3.0)
    • Windows Communication Foundation HTTP Activation
    • Windows Communication Foundation Non-HTTP Activation
  5. Click OK > once Windows has searched for the required features, click Download files from Windows Update > to download and install the required files, follow the on-screen prompts.
  6. Restart PC.
ODBC Data Source AdministratorWindows key + R > type odbcad32 > OK.
Ping Network Utility
  1. Windows key > type cmd > Press Enter
  2. Type ping <>* > press enter.

NOTE: * replace <> with the name of your server.

Windows key + R > type cmd > OK > type C:\ > press Enter > type ping <>* > press Enter.

Printer Driver

Windows Key > Type Printers > select Printers & Scanners

Click Add Device Add Manually then follow the Add Printer Wizard.

  1. Windows key + X > Control Panel
  2. Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers > Add a printer.

    Tip: If the Control Panel is set to view by icons, just click Devices and Printers > Add a printer.

  3. Select The Printer that I want isn’t listed > Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings.
Regional Settings

Start > Type Region > Select Region option

Start > Type Region > Select Region Settings option

  1. Start > Control Panel.
  2. Clock, Language, and Region > Language > Region. TIP: If the Control Panel is set to view by icons, just click Region.
  3. Format drop-down > choose the required language.
  4. Locations tab > Home location > choose the required location.
Register a file
  1. Windows key + R > type cmd > OK.
  2. Enter command regsvr32 <>.dll
NOTE: Replace <> with the file path and name of the required DLL, for example:
  • regsvr32 C:\Program Files\Sage\Accounts\sg50Accounts.dll
Registry EditorWindows key + R > type regedit > OK.
Run commandWindows Key + R.
Safe Mode
  1. Windows Key + I
  2. Click Recovery
  3. Click Advanced Startup

You'll be prompted to restart your computer - When you do, it'll boot into Safe Mode. Restart your computer from Safe Mode again to reboot normally. 

  1. Access the Settings charm.
  2. Change PC Settings > General.
  3. Beneath Advanced Startup, select Restart Now > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options.
  4. Startup Settings > Restart.
  5. When the PC reboots, select Enable Safe Mode (Option 4).
  6. Log on as a user with Administrator rights.

To reboot your PC in standard mode, restart your computer from Safe Mode and it will reboot normally.

Restart the PC and press F8.
Screen Resolution
  1. Windows Key + I
  2. Click Display

Adjust resolution using the drop down options under Scale & Layout

  1. Windows Key + I
  2. Click System
  3. Adjust Display Resolution drop down
Start > Control Panel > Adjust screen resolution.
Search for Files and Folders

Window Key > Type search criteria.

  2. Select the location you want to search.
  3. Type the name of the file or folder you want to locate in the Search box.

Use search bar to the right of the Start button.

Uninstall a program
  1. Windows Key + I > Apps > Select Apps & Features
  2. Locate app to be removed.
  3. Click elipsis  icon.
  4. Select Uninstall.
  5. Click Uninstall again.
  1. Windows Key + I > Select Apps
  2. Scroll to locate program > Click to select > Select Uninstall
  3. Click Uninstall again.

  2. Programs > Uninstall a program. TIP: If the Control Panel is set to view by icons, just click Programs and Features.
  3. Select the program you want to uninstall > Uninstall.


User Account Control
  1. Click Start or press the Windows key.
  2. Type UAC.
  3. Select Change User Account Control Settings.
  1. Start > Control Panel.
  2. User Accounts > User Accounts. TIP: If the Control Panel is set to view by icons, just click User Accounts.
Windows Version

Windows key + R > type winver > OK.
