Once you enable notifications, your can receive notices and messages directly from HMRC.
Your software doesn't require further setup as you've already entered your HMRC credentials to send submissions.
You can receive the following forms, which enable you to update your employee records.
- P6 or P6(B) - Notice to an employer of a change of employee's pay and previous pay and tax
- P9 - Notice to employer of a change in an employee's tax code
- SL1 - Notice to start a student loan deduction
- SL2 - Notice to stop a student loan deduction
- PGL1 - Notice to start a postgraduate loan deduction
- PGL2 - Notice to stop a postgraduate load deduction
- NVREP - NINO Verification Reply (NVREP) is a message sent n response to a NI number Verification Request (NVR) message. It corrects or confirms National Insurance (NI) number information
- NOT - You can receive a NI number verification notice (NOT) after you submit an FPS. HMRC automatically checks that the NI number is present and correct and sends an appropriate response
You can also use the IR Secure Mailbox to submit P46 (Car) forms to HMRC.
Check for messages
You can set up your software to automatically check for messages sent using the HMRC Mailbox.
- Go to e-Submissions, then select e-Submission Settings.
- Check or enter your HMRC User ID and Password.
- Select the Check for new messages when opening the IR Secure Mailbox checkbox.
- Select Save, then Close.

TIP: If you receive a tax code change for a future date, the software applies the code from the correct pay period.
- Go to e-Submissions, then IR Secure Mailbox.
- Select New Mail.
Tax codes and other notifications download to your mailbox. - Choose the relevant form, then click the notice.
- Select Open, then click Apply.
- Select Yes, then Close.
