Set up the Payroll32 ODBC driver
Description

Sage 50 Payroll uses a data source called Payroll32 to communicate with the data held in the database. This is usually set up in the System DSN tab of the Windows Data Source Administrator during installation. However, if this isn't set up, is missing or not accessible, the following messages can occur:

  • Unable to connect to data source.
  • There was a problem opening the database. Please contact technical support.

Reasons errors may occur

  • A corrupt backup has been restored.
  • There is a faulty or missing Payroll DSN.
  • If you can access Sage Payroll when logged onto the computer as the Administrator, but not as a normal user, you may not have access to a DSN.
  • Sage 200 has been uninstalled.
  • There may be occasions when other software installed onto the computer, changes certain settings required by Sage Payroll.

Set up the Payroll32 ODBC driver

You must ensure you're logged into Windows as the Administrator to complete these steps.

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows Key + R.
  2. Type odbcad32 then click OK.
    For 64-bit operating systems, instead type C:\Windows\SysWow64, click OK, locate and double-click odbcad32.exe.
  3. Click the System DSN tab, then double-click Payroll32.
  4. In the Database section, click Select.
  5. Under Database Name, type demodata.mdb, then click OK.
  6. Click System Database.
  7. Under Database Name, type secure.mdw, then click OK.
  8. Click OK, then OK.

If Payroll32 does not appear in the System Data Sources list, you should add a new ODBC driver.

Add a new ODBC driver

NOTE: You need to be logged into Windows as the Administrator to complete these steps. 

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows Key + R.
  2. Type odbcad32 then click OK.
    For 64-bit operating systems, instead type C:\Windows\SysWow64, click OK, locate and double-click odbcad32.exe.
  3. Click the System DSN tab.
    If Payroll32 appears, you should instead follow the steps in section - Set up Payroll32 ODBC driver.
  4. Click Add and select Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb).
  5. Click Finish.
  6. In Data Source Name, enter Payroll32.
  7. In Description, enter System DSN for Payroll.
  8. Open Windows explorer and browse to the location of demodata.mdb.
    For example, C:\ProgramData\Sage\Payroll\demodata.mdb.
  9. Right-click demodata.mdb then click Copy.
  10. In Windows explorer, open the C:\ drive then click Edit click Paste.
  11. Click OK then in the Database section, click Select.
  12. Browse to the demodata.mdb file that you copied onto the C:\ drive.
  13. Open Windows explorer then browse to the location of secure.mdw.
    For example, C:\ProgramData\Sage\Payroll\secure.mdw.
  14. Right-click secure.mdw then click Copy.
  15. In Windows explorer, open the C:\ drive then click Edit click Paste.
  16. Click OK then in System Database, click Database then click System Database.
  17. Browse to the Secure.mdw located on the C:\ Drive
  18. Click OK, then OK.
